Visual Development Artists are digital animators and illustrators that create background art for the video game, animation and visual effects industries. ECA’s curriculum ranges from 3D Modeling to Texturing, Staging, Rendering and Compositing.

Our Vis Dev Artist Certificate Track is designed to cultivate the best talent available for the entertainment industry, resulting in artistic integrity, ability, and a skill-set that is appreciated, respected, and able to flourish. This 4-month long track is split into two 2-month terms. Students are encouraged to take both terms, but may attend a single one as long as they meet the requirements (check our FAQ for more details).

Foundations in basic anatomy and posing. Create characters based on inspiration from live models and pre-selected imagery that reflect the student’s unique style and creativity.

The objective of this course is to learn the fundamentals of world building in Unreal Engine. Unreal Engine is the world’s most open and advanced real-time 3D creation tool for photoreal visuals and immersive experiences.

Create a believable and dynamic composition integrating all the elemental components for coherent perspective, scale, motion, and mood.

This course is a continuation of Composition & Staging 1. Students will leverage what they’ve learned from the previous course to expand creativity on their projects.
CULTURAL CONTEXT

CULTURAL CONTEXT

Discussion of art history as it relates to the creative process. Students will critically examine the role of cultural and architectural references with regard to background design. An emphasis will be placed on constructing concise and creative narratives as supported by mood boards and SEL exercises.
CONCEPTING IN PHOTOSHOP 1

CONCEPTING IN PHOTOSHOP 1

This course focuses on the fundamentals of color and light to include shadows, reflection, identifying color temperature, and color mixing. Students will expand on existing visual techniques and master the rules of color and light in order to create accurate and believable images.

 

CONCEPTING IN PHOTOSHOP 2

CONCEPTING IN PHOTOSHOP 2

This course is a continuation of Concept in Photoshop 1. Students will leverage the fundamentals they learned in the previous course to push the creative limits when making their artistic compositions.
COMPOSITING

COMPOSITING

This course centers on the fundamentals of compositing images from multiple sources to efficiently create backgrounds. Emphasis is placed on user interface, composition, keyframing, layers, footage, color keys, tools and workflows.
MATTE PAINTING

MATTE PAINTING

Photoshop for both CG design and photomontages. Master skills to become a stand-alone technician using these software essentials.
CHARACTER DESIGN

CHARACTER DESIGN

Students will use their creativity and design characters by understanding the concepts of silhouettes, line-up, turn-around and matching styles for both humans and animals.
